School Prevention Programs

Once again this winter, our prevention team has had an incredibly busy month!

Ongoing Programs in February

  • Too Good for Drugs and Violence in K through 9th grades
  • CATCH my Breath in 7th

New Programs in February

  • Stacked Deck in 11th grade. SCVS Prevention started the second cycle of Stacked Deck this month with a new group of kids. As a reminder Stacked Deck is an evidence-based curriculum for the prevention of problem gambling among teens and young adults.

Completed

  • Small Group
  • CATCH My Breath in two of three 7th grade classes

SADD Club

SADD Club focused on two projects in February. On February 10th, SADD encouraged students to wear orange to raise awareness about teen dating violence. Club members handed out candy to students wearing orange and hosted a lunchtime trivia challenge to teach about how common teen dating violence is and the warning signs to watch for.

During the week of February 16th, which was Random Acts of Kindness Week, SADD members watched for students showing kindness to others. Any student “caught being kind” received a Hershey’s Kiss. On Thursday of that week, SADD members also visited several elementary school classes and led a game to help younger students learn about the importance of being kind.

Independent Living

Independent Living had two meetings this month. The first focused on checking accounts and how to write a check. For the second meeting, PS Bank visited and taught basic financial skills, including the differences between savings and checking accounts, what a credit score is, and more.
