School Prevention Programs

Despite the weather making scheduling a bit more unpredictable, the prevention team still had a very full month of visits to SCHS and SCES.

Ongoing Programs in December

  • Too Good for Drugs and Violence in K through 9th grades
  • SAFE-T in 7th
  • Small Group

New Programs in December

  • CATCH my Breath in 7th grade aims to prevent the vaping by emphasizing the negative physical, social, and legal consequences. Students learn peer pressure refusal strategies and the marketing tactics tobacco companies use to influence and target young people. This program always leads to interesting discussions.

Completed

  • SAFE-T in 8th and two-thirds of 7th grade

SADD Club

SADD Club split into two committees to tackle different projects in December. One committee focused on decorating doors to highlight all four of SADD’s main initiatives, using scenes of Santa in various situations to raise awareness about mobility safety, substance use, personal health and safety, and leadership development.

The second committee planned an activity for the winter pep rally. Their drunk driving prevention relay was educational and fun! Students answered questions about driving under the influence to reduce their relay time, and participants wore blurry-vision goggles, spun in a circle, and then navigated a series of obstacles. The Juniors finished victorious with the junior high teams close behind. Congratulations, Juniors!

Independent Living

This month Independent Living was in the festive spirit. The IL kids volunteered at the Children and Youth Holiday Party and at Christmas in Dushore, giving them a chance to serve their community while having fun together. We managed the craft table at the Holiday Party, helping younger children make ornaments and holiday drawings to take home and share with their families. At Christmas in Dushore, we hosted the Elf Scavenger Hunt around town, where people searched for elves in the windows of local businesses. Our IL youth helped folks get started on the hunt, handed out ornaments to the people that completed it, and spread plenty of holiday cheer along the way.
