Sometimes survivors of violence feel ashamed. Maybe when they tried to share their story they weren't believed or they were ignored. Maybe someone blamed the survivor for the violent actions of someone else. Maybe they blamed themselves for the violent actions of someone else. Maybe they don't even view themselves as a survivor.
No one experiences interpersonal violence (such as domestic violence or sexual assault) in the same way. Every story is shaped by personal history, culture, identity, relationship to the person who caused harm, and the resources and support (or lack of support) around them. There is no “right” way to react, to cope, or to heal.
We've collected stories from across the web because hearing many different voices can help challenge the idea that there is only one “real” kind of survivor or one “acceptable” way to move forward. These stories can offer comfort, validation, and a sense of connection. Especially for people who may feel isolated, unsure, or alone with their experiences. You might see parts of your own story in someone else’s, or you might simply be reminded that there are countless ways to survive, to resist, and to heal.
