Supporting LGBTQ+ Survivors

Jump to:
✦ Resource Roundup

Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment, and other crimes deserve support that is safe, affirming, and inclusive. Not only are the rates of intimate partner violence disproportionally higher for LGBTQ+ people, but survivors seeking help can face additional barriers.

If you or someone you know is struggling, this roundup highlights local, regional, and national resources that center dignity, safety, and choice.

Important Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Survivors

You are not alone. Abuse can happen in any relationship and recognizing it is an important first step. Trust your gut. You know your situation best but make sure you plan for unique risks, including (but not limited to):

Being outed without your consent
Digital privacy and tracking concerns
Discrimination or denial of services
Isolation from support systems

Internalized stigma and minimizing what you're experiencing

While as a LGBTQ+ survivor, you might face different risks and more barriers than your cisgender/heterosexual peers, you are just as deserving of safety and respect. Healing, peace, and happiness are absolutely possible.

If you're unsure where to start, you can start small. Identify safe people in your life that will believe and support you.

For Community Members
