## School Prevention Programs

[Second Step Bullying Prevention](https://news.sulcovs.org/august-2026-prevention-education-update) continues in 4th grade and is now taught in kindergarten through 3rd grade. All sessions of SSB have been successfully completed in 5th grade giving us room to start Too Good for Drugs and Violence.

Too Good for Drugs and Violence (TGFD/V) is an [evidence-based prevention program](https://toogoodprograms.org/collections/tgfd-maximizing-life)with the goal of reducing risk factors and building protective factors that allow youth to develop the skills needed to thrive as drug and violence free people. The curriculum starts by teaching skills in setting reachable goals, making responsible decisions, effective communication, identifying and managing emotions, and bonding and relationships. Lessons then apply those skills while also providing age-appropriate information about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, their effects on the body, the negative consequences of drug use and the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle. The final unit focuses on developing skills to handle conflicts without resorting to violence. Skills including showing respect for yourself and others, managing anger or bullying situations, and being a positive role model.

We present TGFD/V in Kindergarten through 8th grade. As of the end of September, we are presenting it in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades but we will start offering TGFD/V to the other grades as we wrap-up SSB and schedules open in October and November.

We are providing additional programs in 7th and 8th grade. Portions of the 7th grade are receiving CATCH My Breath and SAFE-T. While 8th grade is learning about healthy relationships in Safe Dates.

[CATCH My Breath](https://catch.org/program/vaping-prevention/) aims to prevent the vaping by emphasizing the negative physical, social, and legal consequences. Students learn peer pressure refusal strategies and the marketing tactics tobacco companies use to influence and target young people.

[SAFE-T](https://www.pcavt.org/hrp-empirical-basis) an evidence-based curriculum designed by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont to help prevent sexual abuse victimization and perpetration by promoting healthy relationships and healthy behaviors in young people. It's based in the concepts that adults are primarily responsible for protecting youth from abuse, but that violence can be prevented through skill-based, developmentally targeted education with students in the classroom.

[Safe Dates](https://www.blueprintsprograms.org/programs/44999999/safe-dates/) is an evidenced based curriculum designed to address dating violence. Through 10 lessons we aim to change the attitudes and behaviors that are often predictors of dating abuse. The curriculum helps teens understand consent, challenge norms around dating and technology, and recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Bethany attended the September 8 school board meeting to answer questions about We Care Elementary, a curriculum we hope to offer to upper elementary students. We Care is part of the Healthy Relationships Project, the same initiative that developed SAFE-T. The program focuses on building skills that serve as protective factors against child sexual abuse.

Through We Care, students strengthen self-esteem, learn how to build support systems, and practice asking for help when they need it. The curriculum also covers understanding and responding to feelings, empathy, body language, personal boundaries, respecting the boundaries of others, coping skills, accepting no, sexuality, sexual harassment, and identifying supportive adults through age-appropriate lessons.

The school board approved the curriculum.

## Independent Living

IL spent our first meeting this month discussing the independent living skills participants want to continue building this year. We also began planning for Trunk or Treat in Dushore, talking through ideas for our trunk theme, supplies we would need, and ways everyone could help with the project. These conversations gave youth a chance to practice teamwork, decision-making, and planning while preparing for a fun community event.

During our second meeting, we visited Twice is Nice to look for discounted supplies for our trunk. The trip gave participants an opportunity to practice budgeting, comparing prices, and making thoughtful choices about what would work best with the materials available. It was a great hands-on experience that connected independent living skills with real-life planning and problem-solving while helping us get ready for Trunk or Treat.
