New Programs in March

• Everyday Speech is a k-12 social-emotional skills curriculum with lots of videos, games, and activities. Even though we're using this program as a bridge between curriculums, we're excited about the skills it helps students build. It strengthens students' protective factors like supportive and strong relationships with their peers and their community, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, and creating environments that are safe where everyone can thrive.

Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania Statewide Conference

Our prevention team attended the CCGP Statewide Conference on Match 12th. We learned about new PA gaming regulations, the scope of legal and illegal online gambling, risk factors for youth (particularly student-athletes), and how to connect people with problem gambling resources statewide. We'll be able to take what we learned and share it with the community. We're especially excited about how this knowledge will help us better facilitate our Stacked Deck program.

Connected and Protected

Sullivan County School District invited us to attend Connected & Protected - A Family Night on Digital Safety, on March 25th. They had invited a guest speaker from the FBI office in Williamsport to give families advice on online safety, social media, and healthy technology use. We set-up a table to provide information on our services and our prevention programs, like Project SELFIE, that help youth stay safe online.

SADD Club

SADD Club organized and led a Day of Unplugging at SCHS, where 110 students chose to turn in their phones for the entire day for a chance to win a $50 gift card. At the end of the day, participants gathered in the auditorium as SADD members facilitated a reflection on what it was like to be offline and more present. Thanks to some generous teachers, there were plenty of additional small prizes—and every student left with a SOAR card.

Independent Living

At our first IL meeting in March, we used “get-to-know-you” games to practice showing respect, even when we disagree with someone. During the second meeting, we focused on April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and created artwork to display in the CYS offices.
