Back to School: Routines and Resources
It’s that time of year again, back to school time! As we gather up pencils, folders, and other school supplies we also need to fill our children’s backpacks with additional resources to fully prepare them to have their best school year possible, not only academically but physically, emotionally, and psychologically. So how do we do that?
First, establishing a good routine can be very helpful to transition back to the school day schedule. Using a checklist or having a posted schedule for your student to follow will make a new schedule at school a little easier to adjust to.
Along with the schedule, it can be helpful to talk with your student about their concerns or worries so you can help them cope with any emotions or anxieties about starting or returning to school for the new year. Talk them through what their first day may look like as well as go over the basics, such as getting on and off the bus or being dropped off/picked up, what they’re going to eat for lunch, having their backpack with all their supplies, and first day of school outfit ready to go for the morning.
In addition to all the “normal” stuff, helping your student feel safe, supported, and connected can help them thrive throughout the year. Make sure they know who their trusted adult/adults are to turn to when they feel unsafe or need to talk to someone. Brush up on the signs that your child may be experiencing bullying so you can help them through those difficult situations.
Ultimately, the best we can do is to prepare our student to have the best year possible as them embark on this next year of school. Provide them with love, support, and encourage growth and kindness and they’ll surely find success!
