New Programs in April
- CATCH my Breath in 6th grade, has similar aims as the 7th grade program. The goal is to prevent vaping by emphasizing the negative physical, social, and legal consequences. Students learn peer pressure refusal strategies and the marketing tactics tobacco companies use to influence and target young people.
- Relationship Smarts Plus in 7th grade teaches students about all aspects of healthy relationships. Through learning about maturity, what they value, the principles of smart relationships and more, students will gain life skills and build protective factors to help prevent dating violence.
- Safer Smarter Kids in 1st grade, empowers children to identify and avoid unsafe situations, and access help if they are made to feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Children are armed with protective principles including: their bodies are their own and they always have a right to say "no," they need a few adults they trust who they can go to whenever a situation arises, and no one should ask children to indefinitely keep secrets from their trusted adults.
Completed
- TGFD in some of the lower elementary classes
SADD Club
SADD Club organized a Denim and Purple Day to raise awareness for both sexual assault and fentanyl overdose. Students and staff were encouraged to wear denim in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault and purple to honor those affected by the fentanyl crisis and to promote prevention.
Independent Living
At our first meeting in April, Trehab led us through some career exploration via VR headsets. It was exciting to get "hand-on" experience in a variety of careers that are usually not accessible to high school students. IL members got to try their hand at being a lineman, a hotel manager, or surgeon, just to name a few. Thank you Tamara and Trehab for giving us the chance to try them out.
Our second meeting this month focused on protecting ourselves online. We talked about the potential dangers of interacting with others online, including things like grooming and sextortion. We learned about red flags that we should look for and what resources are out there to help people if they are exploited by someone online.
